The City That Shaped an Empire

Shakhrisabz -- 'Green City' in Persian -- was the birthplace of Amir Timur in 1336 and remained dear to him throughout his life; he intended Ak-Saray as a summer palace to rival anything in Samarkand. Though much of his grand vision was later destroyed, the surviving monuments still convey the scale of Timurid ambition.

The Story of Shakhrisabz

A short drive over the scenic Tahtakaracha mountain pass from Samarkand, Shakhrisabz was the birthplace of Amir Temur in 1336 and remained close to his heart throughout his life. He intended his hometown to rival Samarkand itself, and the ruins of the Ak-Saray Palace hint at that ambition: only two of the original portal's towers survive, yet they still soar higher than the Registan's monuments, and an inscription across the entrance reads, 'If you challenge our power, look at our buildings.' Nearby, the Dorut Tilavat complex and the blue-domed Kok Gumbaz Mosque add to the town's UNESCO-listed historic center. Most visitors see Shakhrisabz as a half-day trip from Samarkand, combining a scenic mountain drive with a quieter, less crowded alternative to the bigger Silk Road cities.
